915MHz radio sensor module reaches 10km

Wurth-Thermisto-1-long-range-radio-sensor

Called Themisto-I, it is intended for proprietary IIoT/M2M networks. Point-to-point, star or mesh operation is possible.

RF output from the 17 x 27 x 3.8mm module is 25dBm.

“With the appropriate broadband profiles and increased input sensitivity at the receiver, the radio range can be increased from 800m to over 10km,” according to the firm.

Different modulation schemes are offered, to be used depending on expected range. Net data rate varies accordingly, from 400kbit/s to 30kbit/s of at long range – maximum packet length is always 224byte.

“Additionally, the frequency channel of operation is configurable to avoid interference between several sub-nets of radio devices. The radio parameters need to be chosen for optimal performance based on the required range, data rate, maximum payload size, keeping in mind the compliance with valid regulatory requirements,” said the firm.

Operation is at 3.6V (2.2-3.7V) and -40 up to +85°C.

Curents are: 400mA transmit, 12mA receive and 0.9µA sleep,.

For application development there is ‘WE-ProWare’ firmware and a software development kit (SDK). There is also a manual.

The part is compatible (radio profile, pins and command interface) with a lower power version (Telesto-III).

If 868MHz operation is needed, there are the equivalent Thebe-II and Tarvos-III modules.
